For over 20 years Laila has worked at the intersections of human rights, social justice and development, both globally and locally. In the US, she has primarily focused on immigrant rights, racial justice, and women of color-led groups. In Cambodia, India, Timor Leste, and Nepal she worked with international agencies and grassroots leaders on women’s rights, governance, peace-building and bottom-up policy advocacy. Prior to joining Rise Up, she consulted and worked with funders and community-based groups in the Bay Area on collaborative initiatives, strategy setting and capacity building. She has recently been developing resources for social change makers to build resilience and re-connect with themselves in order to feel powerful in all aspects of their lives. Laila currently sits on the board of Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, teaches a monthly donation-based yoga class in Oakland and loves to go hiking. Laila has a Masters in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, and a BA in Psychology and Spanish from George Mason University.
