Rise Up Leaders in Nigeria
Through our partnership with Cummins Powers Women, Rise Up conducted a second successful Leadership and Advocacy Accelerator workshop in Nigeria for 20 more visionary leaders, who learned to use advocacy and innovation to create large-scale social change.
Leaders participated in hands-on training based on Rise Up’s award-winning curriculum and shared their expertise with each other to develop strategies to improve the lives of girls and women throughout the Kaduna and Lagos states in Nigeria. After a competitive proposal process, we are excited to announce the selection of our grantees!
Rise Up has funded the following nine advocacy projects, which aim to improve girls’ education, end violence against women and girls, advance women’s economic empowerment, and improve sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls throughout the Kaduna and Lagos states in Nigeria:
Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF): Closing the gender gap in education in Kaduna State, a state with very poor education outcomes, by advocating for free and compulsory education for girls in public secondary school.
Bella Foundation for Child and Maternal Care (BEFCAM): Working to end child marriage in Lagos State through the creation and implementation of a by-law to ban child marriage.
The Cece Yara Foundation: Decreasing incidences of child abuse, rape, and maltreatment of girls in Nigeria by advocating for the creation and enforcement of a management system that provides a safe environment for children, especially in child-centered institutions.
Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN): Reducing the growing number of child and forced marriages in northern Lagos communities by advocating with community leaders to implement Lagos State’s Child’s Rights Law.
Foundation for Moral Value Reorientation (FMVR): Improving the economic and social outcomes of female inmates entering the modern workforce after being released by establishing digital literacy and value reorientation centers across 240 prisons in Nigeria.
Health Matters Incorporated (HMI): Improving health outcomes for girls by advocating for the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board to mainstream girl-friendly and comprehensive sexual reproductive health services for girls and young women, without discrimination and judgment.
Hope for the Village Child Foundation (HVCF): Improving the sexual and reproductive health of adolescent girls and preventing unplanned pregnancy by increasing access to services, safe spaces, and tools so they can lead safer and healthier lives.
Population and Reproductive Health Initiative (PRHI): Improving adolescent girls’ health and development across Kudan State by advocating for the adaptation and implementation of the National Policy on the Health and Development of Adolescent and Young People.
Women Connect Initiative (WCI) and Gender Policy Unit (GPU): Improving education and employment opportunities for rural girls and women in Kudan through government funding for rural vocational and technical education.
